Artist bio

Ivan Gette (b. 1988) is a Berlin-based abstract painter whose work grows out of constant movement: cities, encounters, nights that refuse to fade. He has developed a raw, singular language of gesture and color that comes from lived experience rather than observation.

He paints from memory and intuition, without sketches or rules. Each canvas is made in a single, unfiltered moment and shows reality as it is felt, not as it looks.

His work offers no explanation. Meaning happens in front of the canvas, and what the viewer finds there was already in them.

Exhibited at Parallel Vienna and Art Miami during Art Basel.

Works in private collections in Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, the United States, India, the Netherlands, Austria, the UAE, France and Monaco.

Artist statement

Born in Siberia, I came to Germany at seven without speaking German. Hip hop gave me a way in, through skateboarding, and then through graffiti.

Long before I could hold a conversation, I could paint my name on a wall. That culture was built on skill and exchange. Each one teach one. Nobody asked where you came from. What mattered was what you brought: your style, your eye, mutual respect and what you gave back to the culture.

The ethic runs through everything I have built since, including Notagallery, the project space I ran in Berlin from 2022 to 2025 – vacant buildings turned into rooms where more than 500 artists from all over the world could show and work, across three locations.

I work through movement and intuition, building acrylic, spray paint, ink and pigment on raw canvas in layers until the surface holds the state it was made in. There is no plan and no second version. Each painting records a single passage of time: a place, an encounter, a moment that shifted something and will not return.
